The PH Emergency Response Program is responsible for early detection and rapid response to biological (Bio terrorism Preparedness Program) or chemical events, infectious disease outbreaks, hazardous materials spills and natural disasters.
The Wyoming Department of Health has strengthened its capacity to respond to these threats by:
Establishing teams to address organization and maintenance of a command post and emergency operations center and laboratory requirements for identifying harmful agents
Conducting Syndromic Disease Surveillance at large events in Wyoming
Establishing a contract with the regional Poison Control Center for daily reports of calls made to the Center by Wyoming citizens
Renovating the PH Emergency Response Laboratory to a Biological Safety Level 3 Laboratory (BSL-3)
Implementing rapid diagnostic techniques for agent identification
Conducting statewide survey of hospital laboratories to assess training needs
Performing scheduled and unscheduled tests of communication and alert systems
Conducting emergency response training exercises with other county, state, and federal agencies
Installing radio and telecommunications systems to improve communications among state and county agencies and ensure backup communications capacity
Develop a PH Emergency Response Plan for the Wyoming Department of Health
In 1999, the Wyoming Department of Health was awarded a 5 year grant from the Centers of Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) titled "Public Health Preparedness and Response for Bio terrorism."
